Student Management

In Jurongville Secondary School, we believe that every child can make responsible decisions; every child can attain self-discipline; every child can do good.
 
With this philosophy, we adopt the restorative practice approach in creating an atmosphere of trust between students, teachers and parents.  We actively involve students in decision-making and inculcating social emotional competencies. 
 
The GreenHouse was launched in 2012 as an arena for students and teachers to bridge connection between students and staff and fosters a greater sense of belonging to the school. GreenHouse is open to all and students can access the facilities in the GreenHouse after school. With this relaxed atmosphere, students and staff can come together and interact meaningfully through social gaming.
 
The Student Management Department has also established partnerships with external organisations such as Jurong East Neighbourhood Police Centre and the Law Society of Singapore as well as come up with tailored programmes targeted at specific groups of students.  These programmes may include Recharge/Time-out Programme, Step Up Programmes where identified students are invited to participate in team bonding activities and engage in meaningful discussion and self-reflection.

 

Our School Rules And Regulations

The school reserves the right to revise, formulate and add new rules as it deems necessary.

ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY
Every student has the right to a good education and therefore has the responsibility of attending all lessons, CCAs and other school activities punctually and regularly.

  1. All students must be punctual for school. They must not be late for class, assembly, CCA and other school activities.
  2. Students will be considered to be late if they are not seated with their class at the respective reporting venues by 0730 hrs for morning assembly.
  3. Latecomers must report to the Pupil Management personnel on duty or the General Office for relevant documentation.
  4. Students must submit documentation accounting for their absence to their respective Class Mentors upon their return to school. Each student’s absence from school must be supported with any one of the following:
      • medical certificate or report issued by a certified medical practitioner or institution
      • letter by parents or guardians and/or a copy of a document that validates the absence such as an examination entry proof, a death certificate or an official notice issued by government agencies or authorised organisations.
  5. Letters from parents/guardians will be reviewed and accepted on a case-by-case basis. The following are considered as unauthorised absences: 
      • going on overseas trips or holidays during curriculum time
      • engaging in unofficial activities during school hours.
  6. Students who are absent without valid reasons and supporting documents will be considered as having played truant and will be recorded as such. Any tests, assignments, projects or examination missed by students during periods of unauthorised absence or truancy will be given a nil grade/mark. 
  7. Disciplinary actions will be taken against habitual latecomers and students who play truant.
  8. No student is allowed to leave the school premises during school hours without the written permission of the Principal, Vice-Principal or Head of Department.
  9. No student is allowed to leave the classroom without the Permission Pass of the teacher-in-charge.

ATTIRE AND APPEARANCE
Every student has the responsibility of showing his/her loyalty to the school by wearing the uniform properly.
Every student has to demonstrate respect for self and others by being neat and well-groomed at all times.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
  1. Students are to wear the prescribed school uniform and modification to the uniform is not allowed. 
  2. The school uniform must be worn on all days and at all school functions or activities within or outside the school premises. Students must also wear the proper school uniform whenever they come back to school during the school holidays.
  3. All shirts and blouses must be buttoned up. Oversized attire is not allowed. Sleeves must not be folded or rolled up.
  4. Only approved school T-shirts and shorts can be worn during PE lessons and games. No T-shirts are to be worn underneath the school uniform.
  5. Skirts worn must at least cover the knee and must not be folded at the waist. They should not be tight fitting. Lower secondary boys must have shorts worn at waist level. These must be of mid-thigh length and not tight fitting. For upper secondary boys, pants must not be modified or tight fitting. No belts should be worn. 
  6. Sharp-tipped combs and oversized wallets should not protrude from the pockets. Waist pouches should not be worn.
  7. Only school prescribed socks or white socks without any coloured brand names or logos can be worn to school.  Socks must be worn at all times and must be visible above the ankle bone.
  8. Only low cut white track or canvas shoes without any coloured brand names or logos can be worn to school. Students must ensure that school shoes are white and clean.
  9. The wearing of slippers or sandals to school is prohibited except on medical grounds.

ACCESSORIES AND PERSONAL GROOMING
  1. Hairstyles must be neat and simple. The fringe must be above the eyebrows. Hair should not be punkish, tinted, dyed, chemically treated or highlighted. 
  2. Only transparent contact lenses and plain spectacles are allowed. Coloured lenses (including contact lenses) and fanciful / striking spectacle frames are not permitted.
  3. No jewellery, ornamental accessories and body studs are allowed. Religious accessories, when worn, must be concealed. 
  4. Girls are allowed to wear only one pair of small, identical ear studs at the centre of the ear lobes. Chains, rings, bangles and ear sticks must not be worn.
  5. Boys are not allowed to wear any ear studs, ear sticks or earrings.
  6. Fingernails must be kept short and clean. Use of nail polish, varnish or cosmetics is not allowed.
  7. Tattoos or any form of body art is not allowed.

ATTIRE FOR GIRLS
Hairstyle for Girls
  • Girls with hair below the collar are required to tie their hair into neat ponytails with simple hair rubber bands in plain black or dark green.
  • The fringe should be trimmed and kept above the eyebrows. Hair must be kept away from the face using plain hair accessories such as ribbons, elastic bands, hair clips, hair slides and hair bands. These accessories must be in plain black or dark green.

ATTIRE FOR BOYS
Hairstyle for Boys
  • Boys are to keep their hair short, neat and well combed. The hair must not touch the ears and the collars of their shirts. Hair when combed down should not touch the eyebrows. 
  • Boys are not allowed to sport fancy, long or fashionable hairstyles. There should not be excessive layering of hair leading to under-cut or overlapping hairstyles. 
  • There must be a gradual slope at the back of the head.
  • Boys must be clean-shaven. Facial hair such as moustache and beard is not allowed. Long sideburns are not acceptable. The sideburns should not extend below the middle half of the ear.
  • Boys should not perm their hair.

GENERAL CONDUCT
Every student must exhibit exemplary conduct. He/she must respect and care for others and the environment.

Every student is responsible for his/her personal belongings.

Every student must respect the school as an environment of learning that is free from distractions.

  1. Students must be courteous at all times. They must greet all staff politely.
  2. Students must not engage in obscene or socially unacceptable behaviour in the form of written language, body language, speech, signs and/or drawings.
  3. Students must keep the school clean at all times.
  4. Students are not allowed to invite or bring outsiders into the school premises.
  5. Students are not encouraged to bring cellphones to school. Those who do so must switch them off during curriculum time and other school activities. They are only allowed to use them in the school canteen after curriculum time.
  6. No valuables or expensive items, electronic games etc should be brought to school.
  7. Students must take care and help to maintain the school properties and facilities at all times. 
  8. Students are not to possess, sell or use the following items in the school premises: chewing gum, cigarettes, pornographic materials or any other items prohibited by the law/school. 
  9. No card games are allowed to be brought into or played in the school premises.
  10. Students who are in school uniform must not engage in any form of public activity that will tarnish the good image of the school. 
  11. All rules pertaining to the special rooms such as Computer Laboratories, Library, Science Laboratories, Technical Workshops, Art Room, Student Centre etc. are to be strictly complied with. All facilities are to be handled with care.

CLASSROOM CONDUCT 
Every student has the right to a good classroom environment. 

Every student must respect others’ right to learn and therefore must exercise self-discipline so as not to disturb the learning of others.

  1. All students will sit according to the class seating plan.
  2. All students must ensure that the classroom and/or learning area is kept clean and neat at all times. 
  3. All students must stand up immediately when a teacher enters the class; they will greet the teacher in a respectful manner.
  4. Students are not allowed to write on the board without the teacher’s permission.
  5. Students are not to slouch, rest their heads on the desks or sleep during lessons. 
  6. Students must bring their own books and writing materials. They should not borrow these items from other students.
  7. Textbooks or learning materials should not be left in the class cabinets or under the tables unless given permission by subject teachers.
  8. Students are expected to complete and hand in all assignments on time.
  9. Students are to leave the classrooms during recess. They are advised to go to the washroom before/after school and during recess.
  10. Loitering during curriculum time is not allowed. E.g. being in another classroom, along the corridor, or in prohibited areas without the permission of the subject teachers or school staff.
  11. Students must observe orderliness and silence when they are going
      • to their respective classrooms after daily assembly and recess
      • to the canteen for recess
      • to and leaving the hall
      • from one part of the building to another, either for lessons or other purposes.

CANTEEN CONDUCT
Every student has to demonstrate social responsibility by being gracious and by displaying good table manners.

  1. Students can only consume food or drinks at the school canteen during recess or after curriculum time.
  2. Students are to queue up in an orderly manner when buying food and return the empty utensils to the receptacles of respective stallholders after using them.

RESPONSIBLE USE OF TECHNOLGY
Every student has the responsibility to be a good digital citizen and make responsible decisions. 

The school works to educate students to be good digital citizens and to make responsible decisions. Parental support, monitoring and guidance are also required when students are working online at home. 
  1. All students are expected to treat others with respect, behave responsibly and with integrity when using technology. Students are responsible for appropriate use of all computers and electronic devices to which they have access. 
  2. Students should seek the permission of teachers to take photographs or video recording of any teacher or staff, official school events, school trips, or recording of any lessons.
  3. Inappropriate use of technology, including, but not limited to emails, instant messaging, social media , web publishing, and use of hardware and/or software which disrupts or interferes with the safety and wellbeing  of the school community, is prohibited, even if such uses take place outside of school.

ASSEMBLIES AND FLAG RAISING CEREMONIES
Every student has the responsibility of showing his/her loyalty and respect to the nation. He/she therefore has to observe the flag raising ceremony with dignity and pride.

  1. Students who are Singapore citizens must sing the National Anthem and take the Pledge. Students will take the Pledge with the right fist placed over the heart. They must stand at attention and face the flags when the National Anthem is being sung and Pledge recited.
  2. Absolute silence and order must be maintained during school assembly and other formal ceremonies. There should be no whistling, jeering, shouting or screaming during these functions.

ANY VIOLATION OF THE SCHOOL RULES WILL BE DEALT WITH IN ACCORDANCE WITH AUTHORISED PROCEDURES LAID DOWN BY THE SCHOOL AUTHORITIES.
